The Story Comes
to Life
How does nature inspire design? The natural world is full of ingenious designs that humans often take for granted, and it achieves these solutions with effortless beauty. This book holder display mimics this effect by taking a literal look at the phrase "the story comes to life"
How the Story Began
Design a household item inspired by the natural world using laser-cut plywood
Inspiring the Tale
I Lamberton Conservatory is an indoor garden host to a menagerie of exotic plant life full of fantastical forms. Wild plants burst
forth from the confines of the greenhouse creating a fusion of natural
and man-made
Mapping Out the Path
The plants of Lamberton Conservatory possess an out-of-this-world quality, which hones in on a refined problem statement:
Combine the fantastical character of the natural world with the real interior world
Reaching
a Crossroads
Two initial ideas represent the refined concept the strongest: bringing a story to life and a porthole to another world. Life-size paper prototypes were developed to better visualize them in the real world
A book literally coming to life plays the best into the concept. Front and side profiles are sketched out for illustrator laser-cut templates, and utilize a variety of the inspirational plant forms
The Finale
Initial cut is done in cardboard. To accommodate different sized books and to provide a better all-round view, the pattern will be continued across the back of the holder
Patterned pieces are painted in vibrant colors, and to boost the idea of the story escaping the pages vined plants are added to hold the book in place
